Walking, hiking and climbing near the Castel

The enchanting, ever-changing scenery of South Tyrol's mountains and valleys offers countless trails for unforgettable hikes. From leisurely walks along the valley floor to challenging hikes and climbs up the rocky 3000+ metre peaks, you can always count on the mild, sunny climate of this region.

Stretching for miles and miles, South Tyrol's "Waalwege" trails are among the most beautiful hiking routes of the country. They were created centuries ago when South Tyrol farmers built a network of narrow canals to irrigate their fields and orchards. Dozens of these trails are still in use across South Tyrol today. Passable year-round and mostly free of steep slopes, they offer breathtaking views and moments.

Fortress "Schloss Tirol"

The ancestral castle of the Counts of Tyrol for nearly a millennium, this fortress is historically the most significant castle of Tyrol. It is definitely worth a visit. Explore the castle, visit the South Tyrol Museum of Cultural and Regional History, and enjoy the fabulous view – Hotel Castel included.

Gardens of Schloss Trauttmansdorff and Touriseum

"The world in a garden": old and new cultivated plants, cactuses and succulents, deciduous and coniferous trees from around the world combine into a multicoloured, varied scenery that is fascinating to botanists and non-botanists alike. Situated on a sunny slope above Merano where empress Sissy once used to stroll, the flowering gardens of Trauttmansdorff castle and the regional museum of tourism are well worth a visit.

Messner Mountain Museum

Mountaineer Reinhold Messner has called his six museums his "fifteenth 8,000 metre peak". Visit the MMM in Firmian near Bolzano and share in the famous mountaineer's knowledge, experience and the many stories born out of encounters between man and mountain.

Bolzano – regional capital

Bolzano is a melting pot of cultures and contrasts where Germans and Italians mix and live side by side. Alpine and Mediterranean ways of life, customs and traditions intertwine. Marvel at this unusual symbiosis and enjoy the cultural, art-historical and culinary results.

Merano

Situated amidst a splendid alpine scenery surrounded by impressive mountain peaks, the historic health resort of Merano is blessed with a Mediterranean climate and vegetation. Take some time to visit the local museums, take a stroll under the ancient arcades, or enjoy a walk down the luscious green promenade.

Museion

Modern art from the 1950's to the present are on display at the 'Museion' in Bolzano. With its cubic shape, the building itself is a work of art. Its transparent front sides interact visually with the city, linking the historic centre with the new districts.

Neustift convent of Augustinian canons

This active convent unites spirituality with history and excellent wine. One of Tyrol's leading monasteries, Neustift has a famous library featuring, among many other precious books, the world's smallest bible.

UNESCO World Heritage: The Dolomites

The Dolomite Alps, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009, have always fascinated people. Visitors come here to hike, tour the mountain roads by car or motorcycle, or just admire the scenery. These impressive mountains will not fail to captivate you.

Bletterbach gorge near Aldein

Sometimes dubbed the "Grand Canyon of South Tyrol", this gorge is an adventure park, learning centre and natural monument. Geological treasures and typical landscapes present the evolution of earth and mankind from unusual perspectives.

South Tyrol Wine Route

The "Weinstrasse", or wine route, runs to the south of Bolzano and passes by South Tyrol's famous wine-growing towns. From Kaltern via Tramin all the way to Margreid near the Trentino border, countless vineyards line this route, inviting wine lovers to taste an occasional glass.
