April 2025

A red wine in asparagus season? Why not...

Today, wine is more than just an accompaniment to food or the seasons - it is an expression of moments and emotions. Sommelier Ivana Capraro recommends a special wine for April.

She combines this with an unforgettable evening among friends: the Bolgheri Superiore DOC Argentiera 2021, a wine that convinces through emotion, enjoyment and shared experience.

The winery

Tenuta Argentiera

Tenuta Argentiera is located in the southernmost part of the Bolgheri DOC, where the hills of the Maremma descend towards the Tyrrhenian Sea. Founded in 1999, the winery covers 500 hectares, 75 of which are planted with vines. The name "Argentiera" goes back to ancient silver mines.

The vines grow on terraced sites up to 200 metres above sea level - with a view of the sea. Since 2016, the estate has belonged to the Austrian Mayr-Melnhof Group, which focuses on elegance, terroir and consistency.

Oenologist Stefano Di Blasi now leads a team that is fully dedicated to the authentic expressiveness of the Tuscan coast - with sea breezes, intense sunshine and cool nights. A highlight is the "Ventaglio" cru from a unique, fan-shaped plot.

The wine

Bolgheri Superiore DOC Argentiera 2021

"The wine does not dominate, it envelops the food."

The grapes come from the estate's highest vineyards (approx. 200 metres above sea level), with a south-west exposure and chalky, clayey soils with marine sediments. The wine does not dominate - it envelops the food it is served with.

Grape variety:

48% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc

Colour:

Deep, intense ruby red colour

Nose:

Ripe forest fruits, plum, fine spice

Palate:

Full-bodied and multi-layered with silky tannins. Balanced between freshness and salty minerality. Dynamic interplay between nose and palate.

Pairing:

From Gerhard Wieser's kitchen goes wonderfully with: Milk-fed veal fillet roasted in thyme | Braised artichoke | Smoked artichoke cream | Fondant potatoes

Salute!

Did you know...

The panoramic terrace at Tenuta Argentiera was designed by architect Bernardo Tori in 2001. From there, the view extends over the entire Tuscan archipelago - as far as the island of Elba and, on clear days, even as far as Corsica.
