Terra Montosa Riesling 2022 - Georg Breuer Winery

Every month we present a wine from our cellar that our sommelier Ivana Capraro recommends for that month.

September 2025

A wine that tells the story of the landscape.

Some wines are characterised by balance, elegance or complexity - but then there are those that are more: Wines that embody a landscape and its tradition. This is what happened to me with the Terra Montosa Riesling from the historic Domaine Georg Breuer, which I got to know at the SUMMA in South Tyrol - a moment that immediately sparked enthusiasm.

The Rheingau, one of the cradles of Riesling, offers the ideal origin for this. The region literally breathes in harmony with its vineyards, characterised by centuries of culture.

Although it only accounts for around three per cent of Germany's vineyards, it is world-famous for its fine Rieslings. Germany itself accounts for around 40 per cent of global Riesling production - on an impressive 24,000 hectares of vineyards.

The winery

Georg Breuer

The history of the Georg Breuer winery dates back to 1880, when Bernhard Scholl and Albert Hillebrand founded it as part of a wine trade. At the beginning of the 20th century, it became the property of the Breuer family.

Georg Breuer (1910-1982) made the estate internationally famous, while his sons Heinrich and Bernhard raised its profile in the 1980s by acquiring important vineyards in Rüdesheim and Rauenthal.

They were also among the initiators of the Charta movement, which characterised dry, modern Rheingau Riesling. After Bernhard's early death, Theresa Breuer, then only twenty years old, took over in 2004.

With courage, passion and clear quality standards, she led the winery into a new era, switched completely to sustainable viticulture in 2011 and was named "Winemaker of the Year" by Falstaff in 2016.

The wine

Terra Montosa Riesling 2022

„Der Riesling muss nicht schreien, um gehört zu werden, sondern seine Wahrheit elegant flüstern.“

The Terra Montosa is a cuvée that has been in existence since 1990 and combines Rieslings from selected parcels of the top vineyards Berg Roseneck, Berg Schlossberg, Berg Rottland and the monopole Rauenthaler Nonnenberg.

These steep and mineral-rich soils - from slate and quartzite to pebbles and phyllitic rock - give the wine freshness, structure and a fine, salty minerality.

The result is a characterful expression of the Rheingau that remains lean and balanced despite the warm 2022 vintage, with notes of white fruit, flint and a long finish. The wine is vinified traditionally and gently to preserve the clarity of the terroir.

The name "Terra Montosa" goes back to the Latin terra montuosa, which described the slopes of Rüdesheim as early as 1074 - a reference to the region's millennia-old winemaking tradition.

Grape variety:

Riesling

Colour:

Bright, shiny golden yellow colour.

Nose:

It shows notes of apricot, a delicate lemony note reminiscent of sweet Amalfi lemon, with a hint of maritime minerality.

On the palate:

It is silky, mineral, elegant and delicate, structured and fine, with a barely perceptible residual sugar that translates into a subtle softness that balances the wine's sharp freshness.

Salute!
