April 2026

A wine that tells the story of the landscape.

Terlaner Kellermeister Rudi Kofler

Sauvignon Blanc is one of the most fascinating white wines in the world - expressive, fresh and unmistakable. In South Tyrol in particular, this grape variety develops an impressive elegance and minerality that delights wine lovers all over the world.

Sauvignon Blanc has its origins in the Loire Valley in France. There, cool climatic conditions and mineral soils characterise its clear, precise style. The name - derived from "sauvage" (wild) - refers to its lively, characterful expression.

Today, Sauvignon Blanc is at home internationally: in Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé it is mineral and fine, in New Zealand it is intense and exotic - and in South Tyrol it is particularly elegant, fresh and multi-layered.

Sauvignon Blanc has been cultivated in South Tyrol since the late 19th century. The combination of alpine climate, strong temperature differences between day and night and mineral soils - often porphyry - creates ideal conditions for this grape variety.

The most important growing areas are around Terlan, Eppan, Kaltern and Kurtatsch. Particularly exciting: even the smallest differences in terroir lead to completely different styles - from exotic and fruity to taut, mineral and herbaceous.

Sauvignon Blanc from South Tyrol today stands for freshness, precision and elegance - and is one of the region's flagship wines.

The wine

Sauvignon Winkl 2022

Once a pioneer, today a classic of South Tyrolean wines that has been a delight year after year since 1956.

On the occasion of its 70th anniversary, the Sauvignon Winkl from the Terlan winery is at the centre of our wine recommendation.

Back in 1956, cellar master Sebastian Stocker recognised the great potential of this grape variety in South Tyrol and cultivated it as a single variety for the first time - a milestone for Sauvignon Blanc in the region.

The traditional Terlan winery (founded in 1893) is today one of the leading producers of high-quality white wines. Its vineyards benefit from volcanic soils with a high porphyry content, which give the wines their characteristic minerality.

The "Winkl" vineyard is one of the historic Sauvignon vineyards in Terlan. The vines grow at an altitude of 300 to 400 metres on sandy, mineral-rich soils - ideal conditions for an elegant and long-lasting white wine.

A glass of this Sauvignon Blanc is like a journey through the vineyards of Terlan: characterised by alpine freshness, aromatic depth and the typical minerality of South Tyrol.
